The bus did not exactly leap forward. It sprayed sand and skidded rightward.

“Want me to drive?” I said. Couldn’t help myself.

The Professor gave me the very briefest of irritated looks and tried again, more gently. The bus moved forward, wallowed rather, like it was wading. I wondered when the last time was we’d checked the pressure in those tires.

Out of the windows I saw the soldiers and gladiators continuing to retreat away. I was glad the bus’s size gave them pause. Also, that they apparently didn’t realize all this clear glass between us would shatter with a quick swing of any of their weapons. They could’ve mobbed the bus, clambered in, killed us all dead. But they didn’t realize it and so they just stood there.

The Professor laboriously coaxed the bus around, double-clutched it up into second gear and then third, but it was still like driving in molasses. We lumbered in slow motion, toward the Gate of the Dead. Even so, the legionaries—no fools they—buckled and broke; they practically scampered aside to avoid us. Beyond them I saw a low tunnel that ended abruptly at what looked very much like a wall. “Professor …”

“Quentin, sit down!”

As we broke free of the sand, the bus lurched forward. That tunnel was only a foot higher than the bus with barely a foot clearance on either side. We skidded into the chute and it suddenly went dark, and the whole left side of the bus screeched and scraped against stone before the Professor, swearing, turned on the headlights.

We were still gaining speed as we thundered on through the Gate of the Dead. And I started saying my prayers while I still had time.
